Matthew Christie is a multi-skilled craftsman and interior designer. He first followed in the footsteps of his master boatbuilder (shipwright) father, working with multiple mediums – learning to weld, fine joinery, cabinetmaking, spray-painting, varnishing, and fibreglassing – whilst attaining his qualifications as a shipwright.
He moved to London in his early twenties utilising his skills working as a shopfitter and cabinetmaker. Upon his return to Australia, he expanded his qualifications and knowledge by becoming a qualified carpenter getting his cert 3 in carpentry, working on high-end residential projects.
Matthew studied Interior design at the prestigious Design Centre Enmore in Sydney, being one of 25 students selected out of hundreds of hopeful applicants. In his time there he also was one of only three students chosen to showcase his work at the ‘Up and Coming Designers Showcase’. He then went on to further his studies at Sydney Design Centre.
Matthew had an opportunity to live abroad for 4 years in Fiji and East Timor, where he worked for an Australian building company and was a volunteer utilising his skills to help build schools and playgrounds whilst teaching young disadvantaged kids how to skateboard.
It is from this life-long passion working with interior design, timber, and metal, that Matthew, the owner, and craftsman behind Christie Creative now combines his talents to create handcrafted timber fit-outs for Commercial, Residential, and Lifestyle clients with artistic design appeal whilst retaining and improving function and purpose.

I enjoy a challenge, and in the words of famous boat builder Lars Halversen – “If you can build a boat, you can build anything.”
“With this in mind, it is my collaborative design process is key to the success and beauty of the results I achieve with my clients.
Creative thinking and problem solving with an eye on function and aesthetics are central to what I do.
It’s also important to understand where timber comes from and if there are ethical practices involved in harvesting.”
